Old Fashioned Blackberry Cake

1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter or Crisco
2 c. flour
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 c. blackberries
5 eggs
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. cloves

Cream sugar, shortening, and eggs. Mix together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Add to shortening mix, and then mix in buttermilk. Add blackberries last. Bake in greased and floured tube pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Frost with caramel or vanilla icing.
